Session 18: Skin Tear and Nutrition

Skin tears can lead to difficulty as pain delayed wound healing, distortion, cellulitis, or generalized sepsis. The basic goals in treating a skin tear are to save the skin flap, if possible, protect the surrounding tissue, reattach the edges without straining them too much, and finally protect the spot to prevent infection and additional injury. Food is the finest source of these nutrients. Carbohydrates provide you energy to recover. Glucose is necessary for wound healing because it promotes the proliferation of cells, fibroblasts, and leukocytes. As part of the immune response, it is critical for cell communication. To save protein for wound repair and healing, energy needs must be satisfied.

  • Wound healing nutrients

Market Analysis

The global wound care market in terms of revenue was estimated to be worth $39.3 billion in 2021 and is poised to reach $23.8 billion in 2022 and $27.7 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2023 to 2027. The rising incidence rate of various wounds such as pressure ulcers, and surgical site wounds, along with a rise in the geriatric population, and the increase in traumatic accidents worldwide is expected to drive the market growth. Chronic wounds such as venous leg ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers are increasing worldwide. For instance, according to NCBI, around 6.5 million people in the U.S. are affected by various chronic wounds.

Spain Wound Care Management Devices Market Analysis:

Spain's Wound Care Management Market is poised to register a CAGR of 4.7% over the forecast period. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the wound care management market in Spain owing to factors such as reduced cases of accidents and chronic wounds, which were majorly attributed to the lockdown all over the country and the restriction on non-emergency procedures in the hospitals. However, chronic wounds were found in COVID patients across the country. For instance, as per the Spain-specific study published by the National Institute of Health in June 2022, a study was carried out on around 119 patients with acute and chronic wounds.

The prevalence of chronic wounds was around 7.6%, and the incidence was 3.5% in the internal medicine units. Pressure injuries (PIs) were the most common wounds, and COVID-19-affectedpatients had a higher risk of developing pressure ulcers. Furthermore, due to the fear of COVID transmission in hospitals, people were unable to receive significant treatment during the pandemic. However, as restrictions are lifted, the market is expected to grow in the coming years due to an increase in chronic wounds, an increase in accident cases, and new product launches.

Furthermore, there has been an increase in the number of global traumatic accidents. For instance, according to statistics by WHO, every year around 1.2 million people die due to road crashes, whereas, 20 to 50 million people sustain non-fatal injuries. Similarly, as per Economic Times, India witnessed 5,54,796 road accident cases in the year 2020. Such accidents frequently result in significant blood loss and other injuries, necessitating prompt medical response, sometimes requiring surgical procedures to offer patients with instant relief. Thus, the rising number of accidents is likely to boost the demand for wound dressing products which is anticipated to lead to substantial growth of the wound dressing market during the forecast period.
